Chicken Wing lab

On Thursday, October 20, we observed a dissection of a chicken wing. We watched our science teacher dissect the chicken because she didn't want us to get sick because of the risk of getting salmonella. The purpose of observing the dissection of a chicken wing is to identify the different types of tissues and organs found in this structure. We could not find the nerve inside or attached to the muscle. At first the skin on the wing was pink and bumpy. Once the skin was cut off the chickens epithelial tissue or skin we saw a smooth white substance called fat. The fat was found attached to the muscle, which was pink, smooth and attached to bone. When we cut open the bone we noticed that it was full of a red hard material called Marrow. A ligament however is a white object that attaches to muscle and bone. A ligament connect bones to other bones at joints. The cartilage is white as well but attaches to only bone. The cartilage is what helps the bones move without grinding against each other. Another part inside the wing is a Tendon which is a shiny white tissue at the end of muscles that attaches muscles to bones. During the lab we learned that inside the wing there are two muscles that can flex and straighten an arm called flexor, that bends the arm, and extensor which straightens the arm. Who knew that inside our arms are tons of objects that help us work and stay together just like a chicken wing?
